A new reason to post: on blogs vs. editorials

I’ve been compelled to post more recently. Plenty of ideas have been brimming but when I start typing, I immediately find myself gravitating towards the comfort of procrastination; what’s the hurry? Let me refine this till it’s succinctly polished; and in a reluctant instant, that some-day task is threatened to not come to fruition.

It made me realize that my reasons to post may be wrong. I felt that if I write my posts need to be of value to others, which is a seemingly noble goal, except that it’s a bit too vague, and seemingly hard to reach — with the success metric being external as opposed to intrinsic.

My real current reason for writing is for documenting my thoughts, and for sharing in case it resonates with anyone. Writing for value would require a particular audience in mind, and fine-tuning the prose to fit that audience, to optimize their time investment. It would also require cutting through the (thinking) process, straight to the product and that is the antitheses of what I’m contemplating much these days. This delineates the difference between a blog and an editorial, at least to my understanding. My current focus is the former. Perhaps someday I’d work towards the latter, which was something I’ve aspired to for a while, but perhaps blogging, at least for me, is a prerequisite for such focused content.

I find that resonance is key to understanding and change. To resonate is essentially to acknowledge. Acknowledgement is the first step to comprehension or change. In a way, I find much unpolished content offer a relatable medium that often mirrors much within me, an outlet for me to reflect and connect the dots, given that they’ve left traces in another medium outside my mind. Resonance is the gift of a second data point of one, a nod to the fact that our personal experiences are actually shared human experiences.

On that note, if you’ve read thus far, I appreciate it and sure hope it resonated somehow. If you have thoughts you’d like to share, feel free to start a conversation and comment them below!
